Some call it meddling; she calls it matchmaking.
England 1749: LADY EDITH WESTON, daughter to the EARL OF SWANSBOROUGH, is determined to see her friend wed to a man she loves. Unfortunately, Lady Adele, however, has been promised since birth and refuses to break her father’s heart by going against his wishes. Edith, though, cannot accept that, and when she sees the first stirrings of love between her dearest friend and a visitor from the north that Christmas, she is determined to work a miracle.
He came for the holiday; he stayed for the meddler.
JASPER BEAUMONT, EARL OF WHICKERTON, made the monumental mistake of promising his father upon his deathbed that he would wed within the year. Unfortunately, eleven months and far too many days have passed without a suitable bride in sight. At least, until he visits Cumberton Castle for the holidays and his path crosses that of a most intriguing young lady.
When love fails to spark, she's the matchmaker with a torch.
This Christmas novella is a prequel to USA Today bestselling author Bree Wolf's WHICKERTONS IN LOVE series. The novella was previously published in the Holiday Anthology: Naughty or Nice. The novella can be read as a standalone book.

I love the Wickertons, add a Christmas gathering and you have a perfect story! This story didn’t disappoint. Once Upon an Aggravatingly Heroic Kiss, a part of the Whickertons in Love series, is a truly heartwarming story. This series has the best characters, the Wickertons are such an entertaining family! This delightful story from Bree Wolf is infused with warmth and humor. I enjoyed the story of Lady Edith. Grandma Edie has always been my favorite character in this series. It was great to read about the beginning of her mischievous matchmaking efforts. Now, we also know her connection to the MacKinnear’s. This is another charming and romantic love story that I highly recommend. It shows us that anything is possible, especially with Lady Edie’s help!
Novella - if readers have read any of the Whickertons in Love series, then here you get to read Grandma Edie’s love story whilst she is meddling in the life of her best friend. Delightful.
I really loved this book, but of course I’m in love with each and every one of this author’s books. In this one I must confess that I related to Isabella so much! She’s somewhat of a control freak like me. And I totally understand that it’s hard to let it go. Actually, Rowan needed a woman who took control of his life and wrenched him from the shadows in which he was much too comfortable. He needed to be managed and he was! I really loved the side characters as well, because in Lane’s books they are always as gorgeously fleshed out as the main ones. And I especially loved the ladies, the old friends of the late Duchess, who are always helpful and funny. A gorgeous, five star read!!!
This has been such a wonderful series, and this has to be my favorite story yet! Isabella and Rowan are pure delight! The storyline is charming and the clever dialogue and banter between those two make for a most entertaining read. She is a Duke’s sister and he, a successful hotel owner, yet nevertheless a commoner. He could never be accepted by her world, but their hearts say otherwise. I was rooting for them all the way, and enjoying every page of their romance!
Rowan and Isabella’s story is a little strange for the time period and I completely enjoyed it. Well written with interesting characters and an outrageous plot. This story includes some fun bits and steam. Another fine addition to the series from this author.
This instalment covers the twins finding their futures while saving their brother from being blackmailed into marrying someone he does not love. Will Isabella be able to steal the evidence and accept gossip is not her whole life. Will Rowan realise what is in front of him & accept he is worthy of the place his adopted family have gifted him. I found this a really fun witty story. Isabella is quick of mind and saves the situation often, and the steam is also there between her and Rowan. Even the sneezing attacks was charming. Really enjoyed this story.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I love this series, A Gentleman's Guide to Courtship, not only for its ironically-named sub-title, but also for its humor and heart. The Duke of Clearford, creator of the "guide" has pretty much given up on advising potential suitors how to court his sisters. The first three are married, and now it's Isabella's turn. Like the others, she's not particularly interested in marriage--and why would she be when she already has so much freedom?
Rowan Haws is not interested in marriage either, but a potential business deal requires marriage, so he convinces Isabella to play the part of his wife. This ends with predictable results. The way that Isabella can bend the rules of society to pull off this deception is what I find especially surprising.
Lane’s books are always filled with laughs, clever dialogue, and intense sex scenes. Her complex characters always experience transformations. Isabella and Rowan are no exception. Isabella learns she can relinquish the need to control everything because Rowan will be there to keep her safe. Rowan, who had vowed not to marry, takes a bit longer to transform. He needs to see himself as worthy of Isabella and accept the love and acceptance that has been offered to him by his adoptive parents. Then, he needs to face his fears of rejection from the upper classes. Yes, some will reject him, but he doesn’t need their acceptance. Isabella and the very large extended family forming around her will accept him with open arms as soon as he stops hiding. And as long as he has her, he can withstand the disapproval from those who don’t matter.
