Love is the one mission he never trained for.
Emma wasn't always skittish, but life's hard lessons have made her a professional at avoiding shadows—including her own. As a governess, she's perfected the art of blending into the background, reassuring herself daily that her past won't catch up to her. She's almost convinced herself she's safe, until a certain duke reenters the London scene.
She caught him off guard... in his line of work, that’s dangerous.
Hugh has spent years serving the Crown, adhering strictly to every rule—until he meets Emma, whose fear-laden blue eyes stir something entirely new within him. He knows their social stations are worlds apart: a duke and a governess don't mix. But Emma’s plight challenges his unwavering adherence to propriety.
Sometimes, the right rule to break is the one you've followed all your life.
Just when Emma thinks she might survive the social season unscathed, she becomes the focal point of the very investigation that brought Hugh home. Facing a dilemma, Hugh does the unthinkable for a man of his stature—he disregards the rules and falls disastrously, hopelessly in love. And as every well-bred duke knows, falling for a governess isn't just scandalous—it's downright revolutionary.
Will love be their greatest defense, or will Emma's past rewrite their future?
From bullets to bouquets, a spy's unexpected romance.

Lord Ashaven is a spy for the Crown. Emma is a governess with a young daughter, Susan. No one but Emma knows who Susan's father is. Emma works for Pierce Markham, Lord Ashaven's best friend. Ash confides in Pierce his greatest fears and asks for his help to solve the murder of Pierce's ward, Daphnes parents. This wonderful end to a fantastic series has great characters, plenty of suspense and a delightful romance.
This is an interesting and complicated story loosely based on Cinderella. The idea is very similar. A neglected and abused girl is rescued by an honorable hero. Emma is governess to Lord Markham’s ward Daphne. Ash, an Agent of the Crown, has come to England to investigate the murder of Daphne’s parents. Ash’s investigation and friendship with Markham allows him to spend a lot of time in the Markham household and therefore with Emma. There is an attraction, but Emma is uncertain. There is plenty of drama in this one. The villain is arrogant, deceitful, and somewhat insane. The other characters are kind, helpful, understanding, and caring. Happily ever after? This is a fairy tale; Ash even finds her slipper. This is a sweet story, with huggable characters (all but a couple of them), and a wonderful epilogue.
I enjoyed the banter between the main characters. The heroine is trying to make sure her brother marries someone worthy of him so she infiltrates a hotel. The hero needs a wife to be more acceptable as a business owner. They come together for these reasons, but they may get more than they bargained for. This was a cute story.
I really loved this book, but of course I’m in love with each and every one of this author’s books. In this one I must confess that I related to Isabella so much! She’s somewhat of a control freak like me. And I totally understand that it’s hard to let it go. Actually, Rowan needed a woman who took control of his life and wrenched him from the shadows in which he was much too comfortable. He needed to be managed and he was! I really loved the side characters as well, because in Lane’s books they are always as gorgeously fleshed out as the main ones. And I especially loved the ladies, the old friends of the late Duchess, who are always helpful and funny. A gorgeous, five star read!!!
This has been such a wonderful series, and this has to be my favorite story yet! Isabella and Rowan are pure delight! The storyline is charming and the clever dialogue and banter between those two make for a most entertaining read. She is a Duke’s sister and he, a successful hotel owner, yet nevertheless a commoner. He could never be accepted by her world, but their hearts say otherwise. I was rooting for them all the way, and enjoying every page of their romance!
Rowan and Isabella’s story is a little strange for the time period and I completely enjoyed it. Well written with interesting characters and an outrageous plot. This story includes some fun bits and steam. Another fine addition to the series from this author.
This instalment covers the twins finding their futures while saving their brother from being blackmailed into marrying someone he does not love. Will Isabella be able to steal the evidence and accept gossip is not her whole life. Will Rowan realise what is in front of him & accept he is worthy of the place his adopted family have gifted him. I found this a really fun witty story. Isabella is quick of mind and saves the situation often, and the steam is also there between her and Rowan. Even the sneezing attacks was charming. Really enjoyed this story.
